What we think:
The year is 2054. Fifty years ago, something terrible happened and the surface of Earth became uninhabitable. The remnants of humankind escaped to an immense flying island, the Laputa. But a revolt against the corrupt human leadership of the island has escalated into a conflict that eventually destroyed the Orbital Island. Now it's the survivors of the survivors that are running. Can they reclaim the Earth from the unknown forces now holding her in their grasp?

urn-based squad strategy games; in this micro-genre there are two names that come up: XCom and the UFO series. Both following the same formula, UFO aftershock takes the old series, then improves everything that wasn't great and add some all new features to really make it one of the best around.
UFO includes both tactical global view; to manage your groups of Humans against the alien menace, and combat style; where it's a turn-based attack against whatever bad-guys are in your insertion point.
Really the action sections are more simultaneous action than turn based. You can pause the game at any time to give new orders to your guys in the field. Obviously you'll have to choose the right load-out for your blokes (and gals) before each mission. The supplies you'll be picking up by liberating new areas of the planet help to build arms factories etc. as well as researching new technologies in your orbital base.
As well as a base to launch your attacks, your orbital laputa lets you manage your relations with the factions that still live on the planet, fighting amongst each other as well as against the alien and mutant menaces.
Loads of different types of missions are available to your little band of survivors: escort, capture and, of course, hunt down and kill everything.
Basically in UFO there are so many possibilities for some great military leader style strategy that your brain might start smoking...
